Blue Corn (1921-1999) was
one of the greatest ceramists of all time. She made pottery for
almost 70 years. Her house was located across from that of Maria
Martinez but there was no competition between the two artisans.
Maria specialized in Black-on-black pottery, and Blue Corn specialized
in Tan-on-red, Black carved, and in polychrome wares.
Blue Corn was one of the few
San Ildefonso potters to master the use of polychrome slips in
painting her pottery. A variety of clays were collected and then
painted on each piece to create the variety of colors.
This piece reprsents one of
the few existing opportunities to acquire an original San Ildefonso
polychrome potteries by one of the pioneers of the art form.
